Built in the early 1920s by Maharaja Bir Bikram, who came to Shillong at the age of 16 for his military training and fell in love with the place. Tripura Castle is the symbol of the Maharaja's romance with Shillong. Within the castle walls are a wonderful collection of artwork and antiques collected over the ages. Centuries old Chinese furniture, art deco and Victorian objects d'art, blend in with paintings and photographs by members of the royal family. The large private library has several rare manuscripts and valuable first editions. Royal Heritage Tripura Castle is spread over 9 acres of forest and is situated at one of the most serene locations. It offers 10 well appointed and spacious rooms with all modern facilities, while retaining its old world heritage character with carefully selected pieces of furniture from the castle. The other amenities offered are a multi-cuisine dining room, tea lounge, mezzanine bar, billiard room and a professionally run therapy centre featuring holistic & indigenous herbal treatments.
