From the left Rosie, Hoppie & Scrappie at Bandhavgarh
Rosie
Rosie the blind dog has become a regular feature at the park gates. A course of meds is keeping her coat clear of parasites and a supply of dog food from Delhi is helping to balance her diet (the porters at Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi are used to me by now......) At almost 9 years old she is doing pretty well.
Rosie came in season when we were there in May, and she had to be taken into "protective custody" to prevent unwelcome attention. Many thanks to Don & Mary Jane who were looking after Rosie in their room while I had the puppy next door in mine. She enjoyed the peace and quiet, but was very happy to get back to home territory !
Hoppie
So called because of a limp from an injured front leg, Hoppie turned up at the gates in March suffering from a bad dose of mange and lack of food.
After getting the local doctor (who doubles as the vet) to treat the mange and feeding efforts by concerned tourists (another bag of food for the porters in Delhi....) she is recovering well and has regained most of her coat.
Scrappie
On the way back to the lodge one evening at the beginning of May, we found a little scrap of a puppy lying in the middle of the track. Only about 7/8 weeks old and part-weaned, she was very thin and could hardly move. Add to that a skin infection which had caused most of her coat to drop out and she didn't have much time left.
Only thing for it was to move her in with me, and we began a course of injections, daily baths and skin lotions, and worming meds after a suitable gap. Her diet of milk & rice, supplemented by some chicken and the occaisional egg helped her regain her energy. By the time I left she was on the mend and starting to follow me around the room wagging her tail and chewing things like a normal puppy.
One of our drivers, Bhamu, has agreed to adopt Scrappie (he also looks out for Rosie when I'm not around) and has been left with a fund to cover vets bills etc. We'll keep you posted.
